What a compliance check is

A compliance check is when HMRC checks your tax position to make sure that you’re:

  • paying the right amount of tax at the right time
  • claiming the right allowances and tax reliefs

It is also to make sure that the tax system is operating fairly and effectively.

A check involves:

  • sending you a letter and requesting information or documents
  • discussing matters with you to understand your tax position
  • establishing the correct tax position for you and closing the check
