DWP started to introduce Universal Credit gradually from 2013. In 2014 we began to accept more complex claims, mostly from claimants with housing costs. We described this as the Extended Gateway. This research is with Extended Gateway claimants.

The research provides evidence:

  • to support the continual improvement and further roll-out of Universal Credit
  • on whether the policy intent is understood and being met
  • on whether Universal Credit is affecting labour market behaviours and outcomes

This research is part of a longer-term and broader body of plans for evaluating the implementation, delivery and impact of Universal Credit.
