Syndromic surveillance summary: 1 May 2025 week 17

During week 17, GP consultations for allergic rhinitis decreased and returned to seasonally expected levels. In general, gastroenteritis indicators remained stable or decreased, but activity continued at levels above those expected for the time of year. Acute respiratory infection indicators remained at or below seasonally expected trends.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 17, NHS 111 triaged calls and online assessments for diarrhoea were stable but remained above seasonally expected levels. Vomiting calls and online assessments decreased. Triaged calls for acute respiratory infections decreased during week 17, in line with seasonally expected trends.

GP in-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 17, GP in-hours consultation rates for allergic rhinitis decreased and returned to seasonally expected levels. Consultations for respiratory conditions including upper respiratory tract infections and influenza-like illness continued to decrease and remained at, or below, expected levels. Consultation rates for diarrhoea increased overall and in the 15 to 44 and 65 years and over age groups.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 17, GP out-of-hours contacts for gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and vomiting decreased but remained above baseline levels. Respiratory contacts, including acute respiratory infections and influenza-like illness, decreased in line with expected seasonal trends.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 17, ED attendances for acute respiratory infections continued to decrease, in line with expected trends. Gastroenteritis attendances decreased nationally overall and in child age groups, however there was an increase observed in the 15 to 44 and 45 to 64 years age groups.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 17, ambulance calls for difficulty breathing remained stable and in line with expected levels. Calls for ‘overdose or ingestion or poisoning’ increased, particularly during the weekend of 26 to 27 April.
