Details
The Department for Education (DfE) launched the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) in the 2020 to 2021 academic year to support schools and local authorities to provide tuition for their pupils. The programme is well-established, with the majority of state-funded schools in England now offering tutoring.
On 31 March 2022, the department announced plans to simplify the programme for the 2022 to 2023 academic year. These plans involve providing £349 million of NTP funding directly to schools and giving them the freedom to decide how best to provide tutoring for their pupils.
In early July 2022, DfE published NTP guidance setting out information for schools and local authorities on how to provide tuition for pupils through NTP in the 2022 to 2023 academic year.
This information relates to the 2022 to 2023 academic year, we have subsequently published allocations and conditions of grant for NTP 2023 to 2024.

Allocations
We previously published workbooks showing schools and local authorities how much funding they would receive; and have now published the final payment position following completed reconciliation.
For maintained schools, payments were made in:
- September 2022
- December 2022
- April 2023
For academies, payments were made in:
- October 2022
- January 2023
- May 2023
Important points to note:

in the 2022 to 2023 academic year, schools will receive the NTP grant funding for all 3 routes of tuition: tuition partners, academic mentors and school-led tutoring

we have calculated funding allocations based on the number of pupils eligible for pupil premium (PP), with mainstream schools receiving a minimum of £162 per PP eligible pupil and non-mainstream schools receiving a minimum of £423 per PP eligible pupil

schools can claim a maximum of 60% of the cost they have incurred to deliver tutoring in the 2022 to 2023 academic year, subject to the arrangements set out in our NTP guidance

for looked-after children (LAC), we have provided initial allocations based on the standard rate where pupils are in a mainstream school, and the higher rate where pupils are in a non-mainstream school. We will update these allocations when we receive the most up-to-date data
