Ashley Machin

Biography

Ashley Machin was appointed as a member of the DWP Digital Advisory Committee in December 2015. He joined the Departmental Audit and Risk Assurance Committee in June 2016 and was appointed as a Departmental Board member in November 2017, and has been Lead Non-Executive Director, initially on an interim basis, since October 2022. 

In his executive career Ashley spent nearly 30 years at Lloyds Bank and Lloyds Banking Group. As Director and latterly Managing Director of Lloyds Banking Group’s digital business he oversaw the development and launch of a wide range of initiatives, including the launch of mobile banking and payments. In 2014 he left Lloyds, and became Chief Digital Officer at the TSB Bank, where as a member of the Bank’s Executive Committee, he had responsibility for leading and developing the bank’s digital capability, before leaving at the end of 2015 to focus on Non-Executive roles. These began in 2012 when he joined the Digital Advisory Board to the Government Digital Service at its formation – a role he held until 2015. 

He was also a Non-Executive at Swinton Insurance, and an independent NED at Masthaven from October 2016, before four years as Chairman of the Bank until November 2023.

Our non-executive directors are senior figures from outside the department who bring a diverse mix of expertise and skills from across the public and private sector. They all:

  • give guidance and advice to DWP leaders and ministers
  • support and challenge management on the department’s strategic direction
  • provide support in monitoring and reviewing progress
